GAINESVILLE - Hall County Resource Recovery had a message today Saturday for everyone who needs to get rid of that Christmas tree....Don't throw it away, bring it to a compactor site.

If you do, you'll get a white dogwood seedling at any of Hall County's compactor sites, while they last.

At the East Crescent Drive site off Jesse Jewell Parkway, J.C. Guyton is waiting to give a stack of little dogwoods away, first come, first served.

"A lot of people put these around their houses and they make a pretty shade tree because they bloom out so pretty," Guyton said. "They usually ask what color they (the dogwoods) are."

They are indeed white dogwood seedlings; the Christmas trees are recycled into mulch by the county as part of their recycling program; It's illegal to dump the trees in the landfill, they take up too much space.

Guyton says bringing that Christmas tree to him and getting a dogwood in return is a lot better than leaving by the roadside.
