GAINESVILLE - A Gainesville minister who is retiring after 50 years in the pulpit was honored Sunday.

Rev. Gerald Jordan pastored the final 24 years of his career at Evangel Assembly of God, now known as LifePoint Assembly of God. The church recently relocated from Dawsonville Highway to Pine Valley Road.

Jordan said Sunday it turned out to be a good location.

"We've got 16 and a half acres of property," Jordan added. "We're about a mile from the Interstate, they're building a new shopping center over here, and they've just opened up some new condos just down the street."

Church members who worshiped with the Jordans for years gathered to celebrate his retirement as senior pastor.

"I've been able to do quite a bit of missionary evangelism and the church has supported me and allowed me to do this," Jordan said.

A featured attraction at the reception was a cake shaped like a Bible. The man who has succeeded Jordan as pastor of the church, Rev. Rich Gallagher, said he planned to join others in having a piece as he celebrated Jordan's retirement.

"We've got so many people here and we're letting them all see the place, but eventually I do want a piece of cake," Gallagher said.
