GAINESVILLE - Second graders at Jones Elementary School in Chicopee Woods got an early morning break from class Thursday morning to observe October as Fire Prevention Month in a fun way.

On the count of three from Hall County Fire Marshal's Lt. Beverley Walker, four classrooms of second graders - about 80 kids - released their balloons with fire prevention messages attached into the clear blue sky.

It's an annual event to encourage the children and everyone else to observe fire safety.

"Learning should be fun and that's what they're doing, learning about fire safety," Walker said. "The more fun you make it, the more I think that they retain it."

Walker added, "October is Fire Prevention Month and the second of October and we use it as a kick-off for Fire Prevention Month."

Teacher Jessica Sturm said her students learned how to make a fire safety plan with their families.

"They know that their message maybe will be found by somebody who needs to learn about fire safety," she said.

Jairo Calderon said his balloon message warned people about putting lit candles in Pumpkins for Halloween.

"Never put a fire in a pumpkin, if you drop it it will catch fire," he said.

Anna Edick's message was short but very sensible.

"Call 911 if you have a fire," she said.
