GAINESVILLE - Gainesville City Council Thursday agreed to do without state street resurfacing money, but also plans to drop two city streets from the repaving list.

Those two streets include a portion of Martin Luther King Drive and Lakemont Drive, cut from a $617,000 repaving contract on 15 streets to stay within the budget and do without a $80,000 state allocation.

City Manager Bryan Shuler told the council state funding is not reliable in these tough economic times, and he wants the city to be less dependent on state money anyway and use local special purpose sales tax and general fund revenue.
