GAINESVILLE - Hall County school board members set the school calendar for 2009-10 Monday night on a recommendation from Superintendent Will Schofield.

Assistant School Superintendent Eloise Barron said teachers had two calendar options, and chose the one with a fall break.

"They will have Oct. 9 and the 12, and then we'll have our professional learning day one day instead of two days in the fall," Barron said.

Barron added students get a long weekend the second week in October next year, with Oct. 9, 12 and 13 off for fall break and one teacher professional learning day.

Teachers report Aug. 3 next year for the new school year, which begins for the students Aug. 10. The school year ends for students with the last scheduled day of class on May 21, 2010.

Students and staff get 22 holidays on the 2009-10 calendar.

GIVE THE 'BRANCH' A REST

School board members voted to give the "Branch" football field at Flowery Branch High School a rest until funds are available for a permanent fix.

Board members learned the field is still not in good shape, and that a permanent fix could cost $600,000 for a synthetic field and $400,000 for a natural field repair.

Schofield said there's an alternative: use the field next season at the new high school nearing completion in South Hall.

"The new school is progressing much quicker than we initially thought and it looks like we could move the program over to the new facility," Schofield said.

Schofield added that using the new field would give the system time to work on a permanent repair for the field at the "Branch."

JROTC ON HOLD

Schofield also recommended holding off on setting up a Junior ROTC program as West Hall High School.

"At this point until we get some more information because of these uncertain economic times, we're going to put that on hold for the next couple of months," Schofield said.

Estimated cost to start the West Hall JROTC program, possibly an Army program, is $120,000 with $85,000 to operate and maintain it.

October's school system Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) revenues were $300,000 lower than October 2007, according to Finance Director Lee Lovett.
