GAINESVILLE - Homeowners who live along the Mulberry River in south Hall County near Braselton Monday night battled against a planned shopping center across the river from them at the Hall County Planning Commission meeting.

Patricia Ellis said it's in a flood plain on land never intended for development and there's no urgent need for it and the restaurant it would bring.

"Construction on a flood plain reduces its ability to channel flood waters safely away from nearby structures," Ellis said. "I see absolutely no reason whatsoever that we need to build on a flood plain."

Several other homeowners lined up behind Ellis to oppose the development.

Planning commissioners approved it because it fit the land use plan, it will be on sewer and a flood plain study is required to measure impact.

NO BARKING, PLEASE

Planning Commissioners recommended approval of a Veterinary hospital on Jay Mountain Road after they got developers' assurances that there would be no noise from the K-9 clients.

Nearby homeowners Darrel Carruth and Ralph Elliot were not convinced even when the building designer said the dogs would be kept inside and taken outside only for exercise.

"We're thinking there will be a lot of noise there and dogs barking and things like that and we're opposed to it," Elliot said.

EAGLE RANCH

Planning Commissioners unanimously approved a request from Baker Land Design to develop a 266 tract near Union Church Road for Eagle Ranch to provide new homes for children in crisis, maintenance buildings, two staff homes and a community lodge.
