GAINESVILLE - By mid-morning today, a random check of select precincts around Hall County showed, for the most part, a steady stream of voters.

By 9:30, 276 people had voted at Friendship I near Flowery Branch. At 10:00, 434 votes had been cast at West Whelchel in north Gaineville; In North Hall, 106 voters had marked their ballots by 9:00 at the Chestatee precinct. As noon neared, 220 people had voted at Gainesville III.

Super Tuesday got off to a rocky start at at least one Hall County polling place.

At Wilson II, voters who showed up early didn't get to vote right away because of glitch with the system that spits out the cards that are used in the actual voting machines.

It was a frustrating first few minutes according to poll manager Eulene Thurmond.

"They're not working," she said. "We run a card through there and give them a card to vote, and if they're not working we'll have to do it manually until we get somebody down here."

The problem with the 'Express Poll' machines was worked out after the Wilson II workers got some help.

Across town, though, at New Holland, it was smooth sailing to begin with. Poll Manager Alwayne Randolph said by 8:00, poll workers reported that more than 60 voters had already cast ballots.

"We had quite a few at 7:00 a.m. once we opened the doors," she said. "After then its been sort of continuous; we may get a rush later on."

Secretary of State Karen Handel and others are predicting a record turnout in Georgia today for a presidential primary. (See separate story).
