GAINESVILLE - Gainesville Planning and Appeals Board members Tuesday night gave the City of Gainesville the go-ahead for a new industrial park in the Calvary Church Road area.

They heard objections from nearby landowners about negative impact but also heard Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce President Kit Dunlap say the city needs industrial space.

"We're basically out of space; we have a few lots or a building here and there in a finished park," Dunlap said. "We know the potential developer and we know what can be achieved out there. It would be a great economic success for Gainesville, Hall County and the whole region."

Dunlap's comments echoed Assistant City Manager Kip Padgett, who said the city was getting low on industrial park space.

"Industrial parks are a very important part of our community. They help with our tax base and it's good economic development," Padgett said.

South Oak Subdivision developer Lawrence Cochran said an industrial park locating next to his residential site was not good.

"This development will hurt my future development for future construction in that area," Cochran said.

Three other land owners and home owners followed Cochran, saying the industrial park would bring traffic and environmental problems to the area.

Board members unanimously approved a 20-acre annexation and Heavy Industry rezoning and the Heavy Industry rezoning of 210 adjacent acres, already in the city.
