City Planner James Riker said its all part of a plan to renovate and restore the city's historic business district.
"In the Main Street area between Railroad Avenue and Church Street all the utilities are underground. We have wider sidewalks, we have new decorative street lights and we will have no overhead power service or lights within the district," he said.
Riker said the work is part of improvements with money from the State Department of Transportation, but the city paid for the underground power and street lights.
Riker said the project is nearly complete. Final asphalt paving and street re-striping is about all that's needed to finish up.
City Council is discussing the possibility of installing Main Street landscaping
that was part of the state grant but was deleted because of drought restrictions.
Riker said he expects project completion within 30 days, in plenty of time for the city's Spring Festival in April.
