Tanker truck flips on Athens Highway

GAINESVILLE - Gainesville police said it appears the driver escaped injury after his city owned public works tanker truck overturned Tuesday afternoon on Athens Highway at the north exit ramp at I-985.

One lane of northbound traffic was partially blocked by the accident.

The tractor-trailer remained on its right side as police and the Georgia State Patrol completed their investigation. The rig flipped over while apparently turning left as it headed into Gainesville after exiting 985.

According to initial reports, the driver was pinned in the cab and the tanker contained gasoline, but police at the scene said there was no gas on board and the driver apparently got out safely.

Police said the truck was raised and moved from the scene around 7 p.m.
