GAINESVILLE - Gainesville/Hall County homeowners facing foreclosure were on hand Wednesday at the Civic Center to hear that new federal grant money is available to help them.

Georgia's share of that grant money adds up to $887,000 funneled to counties through the state Department of Community Affairs, according to Business Development Coordinator Ron Ross.

"The goal is to keep people in their homes," Ross said. "It's better for the economy, better for everybody, if people keep their homes."

Ross said lenders don't want houses. They're willing to work within the rules to try to make sure people keep their homes.

Hall County's share of that foreclosure mitigation money was not disclosed but Mary Ledbetter, head of Home Development Resources, said it would be enough to help 90 percent of the homeowners her group is assisting.

"We're in a bad position and it's beginning to get worse. That is what we fear so we want to stop that from happening," Ledbetter said, adding that assistance applications are coming in daily.

"You can call our office at 770-297-1800. We'd be glad to set you up an appointment and talk with you and then your lender," Ledbetter added.

Ross said the worst thing a homeowner in trouble could do is not answer the phone and talk to their lender.

Ledbetter said lenders are loosening up and beginning to work with her nonprofit agency.

"They're beginning to work with us a lot more," she said. "They want to prevent those foreclosures also."
