GAINESVILLE - Brenau University president Dr. Ed Schrader told Gainesville Rotarians Monday a medical school at Brenau is feasible - all he needs is $50
million.

Schrader, the club's featured speaker, said if there was a $50 million donor in the audience, he'd be glad to talk to them, and if there was a donor like that "I would go to the trustees and ask for their vote and approval to start a medical school."

Schrader said the $50 million would pay for the school's first seven years.

He added $15 million could pay for a med school facility with 125 students a year.

Physically, strategically, according to Schrader, Gainesville could do it. The question is, financial support.

"We have the right-sized medical community here, we've had overwhelming response from the physicians in the area. There's no question we can make this happen," Schrader said.

Dr. Schrader said a medical school would fit right in with his strategic plan for Brenau growth through the year 2025, which was announced over the weekend. (See separate story).

"The plan of expansion is focused on making a very selective and high quality undergraduate experience," Schrader said. "This could be considered a transformational graduate program, so it fits in the plan perfectly."

Schrader added the strategic plan would work with or without the medical school.

Brenau's Board of Trustees have affirmed the framework for the $40 to $55 million plan to transform the university into a private doctoral degree-granting liberal arts school with a national reputation and a global reach.

The plan would double enrollment to 5,000 students by 2025 by adding new degree programs, including doctorates.
