Water restrictions unfair, says Gainesville councilman

GAINESVILLE - A Gainesville City Councilman said Thursday state water restrictions are unfair when it comes to contractors doing work homeowners should be allowed to do.

Bob Hamrick said he's heard from a homeowner who says he's not allowed to pressure wash his house, but a contractor can under current water limitation rules.

"I think it's unfair. Everybody should play on the same playing field and have the same restrictions or the allowance to do things," Hamrick said.

While the restrictions were supposedly set up to help small businesses during the drought, Hamrick said citizens should have the right to do their own home maintenance.

"I understand helping business, but at the same time I think that a private citizen, if he can avail himself of that service himself, he should have that privilege," he added.

WATER RATES

Mayor Myrtle Figueras said she expects to learn in two weeks how the current drought could impact water rates when public utilities presents its proposed FY 2009 budget.

Figueras said the overall 4 percent rate hike customers are seeing is because of scheduled conservation rates, not the drought.

"These are established conservation rates that were instituted January 1," Figueras said. "It appears that because the drought came at the same time it appears that we're raising rates, but we're not."
