GAINESVILLE - Construction on Gainesville's new downtown parking deck is now slated for January 2009, according to City Manager Bryan Shuler.

Shuler said Thursday he expects the city to take bids this summer.

"We don't want to be building this during the peak shopping season, so construction will begin after the first of the year," Shuler said.

Work on the $5.5 million facility was originally scheduled to begin three months ago, but Shuler cited planning delays.

Plans call for replacement parking at the nearby site of the Greater South Building. The city plans to demolish that building and turn the property into a parking lot. The city bought the property last year.

Shuler said the new four-story parking deck will include 400 parking spaces - 200 more than the current deck.
