Students, faculty, staff members, alumni and retirees gathered at the Wetland Pavilion off the bike trail at the back of the college.
Dr. Lewis Rogers, former head of GSC's science division, recalled Mayhew pioneered environmental teaching at the campus.
"I would say we probably wouldn't have the environmental special analysis degree today if Ed had not been there as a catalyst," Rogers said.
Mayhew was taught biology at GSC from 1979 until his death in 1998. He was a known environmentalist and Lake Lanier authority.
A memorial plaque was placed in Mayhew's honor at the pavilion.
