ATLANTA - A series of hearings on a rate hike request from from Atmos Energy , which has customers in Gainesville and Columbus, is underway this week in Atlanta before the state Public Service Commission (PSC).

Atmos is requesting an annual revenue increase of $6.1 million, or an estimated monthly increase of $4.71 on the average residential customer's bill, according to a posting on the PSC Web site.

Atmos last received an increase in its base rates in 2005.

Additional hearings are scheduled for Aug. 12-14 in Atlanta and Sept. 3-4 at the Georgia Mountains Center in Gainesville, according to the posting.

The commission is scheduled to make a final decision on the request Sept. 17.
