GAINESVILLE - Hall County commissioners decided 3-2 in favor of farming over homeowners Thursday night in a clash over locating new poultry houses in north Hall County close to the White County line.

Don Jordan and Robert Stevenson sought to appeal the planning commission's approval of a 43-foot variance on Milton Satterfield's poultry houses on Home Place Road.

Satterfield said he is in an agricultural zone and the poultry houses belong there.

"I would like to keep it agricultural and I don't feel the 43 feet will be an impact," Satterfield said.

Jordan, Stevenson and other property owners argued the variance would devalue their property because the poultry houses are not visibly pleasing.

Commissioners also heard both sides in a public hearing on granting a special events license to Holiday on Lake Lanier pavilion on Holiday Road.

Nearby homeowner Robert Davis said granting the license just means more noisy nights, and wants county ordinances enforced.

"I think as an individual I'm entitled to my rights under the law," Davis said.

Holiday pavilion operator Vernita Loveridge said she was complying with Corps of Engineer regulations.

"We're not asking for anything we haven't been doing for the last eight years," Loveridge said.

Commissioners listened but took no action because the request was a first reading.
