GAINESVILLE - The Gainesville City School System has an interim superintendent. The announcement came Wednesday morning at a system employee's reception and called meeting at the Gainesville High School cafeteria.

Fair Street Elementary School principal Dr. Merrianne B. Dyer was named interim school superintendent for the coming school year by school board chairman David Syfan before a room full of system employees and teachers.

"We wanted somebody who was familiar to our teachers, familiar to all our community, familiar to our administrative staff," Syfan said. "We wanted someone who would help bring all those various stakeholders in the system together."

Syfan said Dyer's selection was unanimous, and the audience greeted her with cheers and applause.

During a brief called meeting following the reception the board formally appointed Dyer to the superintendent's post and approved her replacement at Fair Street.

"Will Campbell, who was assistant principal at the International Baccalaureate Academy at Fair Street, will now be the interim principal at Fair Street," Syfan said. "One thing we looked at was stability for the system and only two positions were shifted."
