GAINESVILLE - The Gainesville School Board is likely going to miss its July 29 deadline for passing a new budget, according to chairman David Syfan.

The board did not discuss budget issues during a brief called meeting Wednesday morning at Gainesville High School, but Syfan disclosed that the board likely would not be meeting its end of the month deadline for adopting a 2009 budget.

"We are probably not going to be able to meet the budget deadline of July 29 and will probably operate under the operating statement for August," Syfan said.

"We're still waiting on accurate numbers as to what effect these cuts (recommended budget cuts) will have. We're still waiting on the final deficit figure for last year.

"The board wants to make 'doggone' sure we make good decisions on accurate data."

The board met following a reception to announce the appointment of Fair Street Elementary School principal Dr. Merrianne B. Dyer as interim school superintendent.(SEE SEPARATE STORY)
