GAINESVILLE - High gasoline prices are a mixed blessing for one retailer in Gainesville.

Gainesville Motor Sports on Browns Bridge Road sells six brands of motorcycles, and owner Jimmy Westray says the cycle sales are very good - they use much less gasoline.

"People are buying them more for transportation more than I've ever seen it," Westray said. "We've been in business since 1974 and that part of the business is really strong."

Westray also sells two brands of watercraft. Those sales are not so good; Lake Lanier's low level and the gas prices are not helping.

"Water craft has been hurt the hardest this year because of the lake level and the high gas prices and the economy in general," Westray said.

Westray added that overall it's been a good, if not great year, certainly better than the housing market.

Westray also wants customers to be safe; he's stressing safety training for new riders bent on saving dollars.

"People who haven't ridden in a long time are back into motorcycles and we're getting a lot of first time riders and that's good as long as they get motorcycle training," Westray said.

Westray added he offers basic safety training to buyers and urges them to take training courses offered by cycle companies and trainers in Gainesville.
