GAINESVILLE - Gainesville City Councilman George Wangemann urged citizens Thursday to call 911 immediately if they witness a drug deal in progress, like the one he said he saw near his home recently.

Wangemann said calling the emergency number would be the best way to alert the Multi Agency Nartcotics Squad (MANS) to illegal drug activity.

"I'm just saying call 911 immediately as if it were a true emergency because this could truly become an emergency," Wangemann said.

Wangemann also wants the City Marshal's Office to urge more businesses to become "Drug Free" work places and to put random testing in place to deter drug use.

DELAY LICENSE FEES

Council members told a local package store owner they would look into delaying the license fee due date under the city's newly amended alcohol ordinance.

Woody Justice, owner of the Wagon Wheel on Thompson Bridge Road, asked if a 30-day postponement is possible on his $6,000 fee.

"It's going to put a hardship on me to come up with that fee in November and cut that amount of inventory I would be able to buy," Justice said.

Justice added he and the other 14 package store owners could use the delay to enable them to purchase inventory for heavy end of the year business months.
