They began picking up the trash early at 8 a.m. Howard Bradley has been handing out the trash bags and Shore Sweep T-shirts at Clarks Bridge Park for five years, and the volunteers kept coming.
"They're all out gathering trash. They've picked up bags and gloves and they're very enthusiastic," Bradley said.
Several of the shore sweepers came from Keep Hall Beautiful, along with 30 students from North Hall Middle School.
Clarks Bridge was one of several locations where the annual Shore Sweep got underway. Volunteers hauled in everything from old tires to big slabs of Styrofoam broken off from boat docks.
Thirteen-year-old eighth grader Tyler Kratzer did not let a broken leg and crutches slow him down.
Young Kratzer got assistance from his Dad picking up the trash and found that when you go looking for trash you might find treasure, like a genuine Indian arrowhead a friend found on the shore.
"We had a class idea to come and do this. I broke it (his leg) last week and didn't want to ruin it, so I decided to come," he said. "I've been carrying bags and everybody's been picking up trash and putting it in there."
