GAINESVILLE - "Keeping the Dream Alive, Change Requires Action" was the theme of this year's King Day observance at the E.E. Butler Community Center Gym attended by a gym full of people.

Songs, prayers and speeches by Gainesville's spiritual, political and education leaders highlighted the program.

Featured speaker, Pastor Stephen Samuel of St. John Baptist Church, said slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King did not belong just to black people but was a 'prophetic gift' to the entire world.

"When we say 'Happy King' Day, we are not just speaking to the black community, but we are speaking to the Latino community, we are speaking to the Caucasian community, we are speaking beyond America to the European and Asian communities."

The program climaxed an afternoon of activities celebrating King's birth, which began with a rally and march in downtown Gainesville. (See separate story).

Other King program speakers included Gainesville Mayor Myrtle Figueras and Gainesville School Superintendent Dr. Merrianne Dyer.
