GAINESVILLE - Gainesville Planning and Appeals Board members decided Tuesday night that the Bruster's Ice Cream sign on John Morrow Parkway is just too big.
Planning and Appeals chairman Dean Dadisman said he has no problem with the sign's invitation to come 'Treat Yourself'.

"I don't have a problem with that sign but I sure do have a problem with setting a precedent," Dadisman said, adding that if the sign was left as is, the city would have to re-write its sign ordinance to accommodate other businesses wanting a larger sign.

Ben Ditta with Bruster's said he did not know the sign was too large as he spoke in favor of his sign variance request.

"We had no idea that there was a zoning requirement and frankly I'm surprised that it didn't come up from the people who installed it," Ditta said.

Ditta said Bruster's wanted the sign bigger to invite customers coming down the street from Pearl Nix Parkway.
With Bruster's several employees sitting in the audience wearing bright red company shirts to show support, Ditta said he had a petition with nearly 300 signatures from people who liked the sign, including the Gainesville High School principal; Gainesville High is located behind the ice cream franchise.
Planning and Appeals Board members invited Ditta to come up with a smaller sign to promote the ice cream shop.
