GAINESVILLE - With summer vacation just around the corner, Safe Kids Gainesville-Hall County decided now is the perfect time to teach students some safety basics.

The agency hosted its first safety fair Thursday for 2nd and 3rd graders at Chestnut Mountain Elementary School. Students in the same grades at Fair Street Elementary will take part in safety activities Friday. The safety fairs culminate a week's worth of events for Safe Kids Week 2009.

Safe Kids Gainesville-Hall County Coordinator Kim Martin said, "Its a way for us to reach children especially since they're about to be out of school. They're going to be out and about in pools, on the lake, traveling, and we want to reach them and remind them of some safety rules such as a fire escape plan, wearing your seat belt, wearing your life jacket when on a boat or near water."

Topics covered at both safety fairs are water safety, use of the 9-1-1 system, fire safety, poison prevention and safety on the road. This is the 16th year Safe Kids Gainesville-Hall county has hosted safety fairs, according to Martin.

"It's gone great! The teachers are real excited, the school administration has been very helpful, the kids are really learning alot and asking a lot of really good questions. It's gone really good." Martin said.

According to Safe Kids, accidental injury is the number one killer of children ages 14 and under. By the end of the week Safe Kids Gainesville-Hall county will have taught around 600 students how to be safer and avoid these injuries.
