Hall's projected budget revenues questioned

GAINESVILLE - Hall County Commissioners took public comment on their proposed FY 2010 budget Monday morning and heard president of the Hall County Taxpayers Association Doug Aiken tell them that the budget's revenue is over-projected by just over $2-million.

Cuts and layoffs make the $92.7 million spending plan $5-five million less than the 2009 budget.

Aiken said the county should look at further reductions including cutting salaries and the number of meeting days from 12 to nine. Aiken also advised taking a realistic look at sales tax revenues, which are not likely to improve until the economy improves, possibly next year.

County Administrator Charlie Nix said the new budget is on track, disagreeing with Aiken's projections. He said sales tax revenues are beginning to increase enough to use as a reliable revenue source.

"We see a little more increase in that and we've already seen some increase," Nix said.

The Commission expects to hold its second budget public hearing and vote on the budget when it meets in regular session Thursday.

WAITING FOR ETHICS

Hall County Commissioners won't vote until next month on their ethics resolution despite a call from Commissioner Bobby Banks for a vote this week.

Exactly who would hear and investigate ethics complaints against county commissioners is still a sticking point; Commissioner Steve Gailey said complaints could be directed to the Grand Jury.
