GAINESVILLE - Construction workers were busy Tuesday morning erecting pre-fabricated sections of the new Georgia Mountains Center Parking Deck in downtown Gainesville.

Last Thursday morning it took a big construction crane on the site to lift and assemble the sections of the giant 475,000-pound crane now assembling the four-story deck.

Project Superintendent Bob Rice with Optim Construction Group said he hopes the deck will be ready for parking by late August or early September; work has been delayed because of recent heavy rain.

City of Gainesville Project Manager Jarrett Nash advised motorists to expect traffic tie-ups downtown as big transport trailer trucks bring in the pre-fabricated parking deck sections.

The four story $6.8-million deck will have just over 400 parking spaces, doubling the amount of space in the old parking deck.
