Habersham Sheriff's Investigator Michael Long said the young man was robbed, but the robbery occurred in Cleveland.
"The young man was involved in an illegal activity," said Long. "[He]did not want to tell his parents about that, so he made up the story about being robbed inside Habersham County."
Long would not say what type of illegal activity the teenager was engaged in, since Cleveland police are investigating the incident. He said the teen and his parents came to authorities Wednesday afternoon to recant the original armed robbery report.
The teenager faces charges in Habersham County of false report of a crime and false statements to law enforcement.
