GAINESVILLE - Some fireworks spectators chose to avoid the traffic and the crowds at Laurel Park and watched the show from the roadside this July 4th evening.

At Wynell Drive and Cleveland Highway observers could see the American Legion fireworks show, only partially blocked by trees across the road.

People who live in the neighborhood brought their lawn chairs, bought pizza from a roadside vendor and enjoyed the show for the second year in a row very close to their own front yards.

One homeowner said it appeared there were more people watching the fireworks from the road this year than last year.

Hundreds of boat owners and their passengers also watched the big sky show, anchoring their vessels in Lake Lanier near Laurel Park.
