GAINESVILLE - Hall County School Board members Monday night approved make-up middle school basketball games to be played on Wednesday, an exception brought on by winter weather game cancellations according to system athletic director Gordon Higgins.

"We now have two dates to try to make up and only two weeks in the season left, so the Board approved tonight to let the middle schools play this Wednesday to get one of those dates made up," Higgins said.

Higgins said normally games are not scheduled on Wednesday because of mid-week church services. He added some canceled high school wrestling events and basketball games could also be played on Wednesday with a Georgia High School Association waiver of a rule that limited high schools to only one-week night game during the season.

"They waived that given the number of make-ups they have as well, so there could be some high schools that have to schedule Wednesday games as well to complete their seasons," Higgins said.

NO CHANGE WANTED

School Board members wanted no change in system leadership during their first meeting of the New Year.

The board extended Supt. Will Schofield's contract and re-elected Richard Higgins as chairman and Nath Morris as vice chairman for another year.

Schofield said system staff and the Board has been willing to innovate in the face of the recession's impact on education.
