FLOWERY BRANCH - It was up, up, and away this weekend in Flowery Branch at the first annual Harvest Balloon Festival at Sterling on the Lake, hosted by Newland Communities to benefit Challenged Child and Friends and the National Military Family Association this weekend. The festival celebrated the autumn season with balloon adventures for passengers who gathered in the chilly pre-dawn for sunrise rides in 12 huge, colorful hot air balloons early Saturday and Sunday.

The festival invited the weekend crowd to come out for competitive races, tethered balloon rides in the afternoon, a costume parade, pumpkin carving, hay rides and a special Saturday night concert as well as lots to eat from food vendors, carnival sweets and a bake sale.

James Baker from Auburn in neighboring Barrow County said he enjoyed the high flying hot air ride so much he took off into the morning blue sky twice, Saturday and Sunday.

"It was a lot of fun," Baker said. "It was kind of scary but once you take off you never think about it again and I was so excited I had to do it again today."
