GAINESVILLE - A Roy Barnes supporter says he has hired a lawyer following his arrest for carrying a campaign sign at Mule Camp Market in downtown Gainesville.

Larry Gibson was arrested during the festival after he refused to stop displaying the "Roy Barnes for Governor" sign at the Gainesville Jaycees-sponsored event. Gainesville Police Lt. Carol Martin said the Jaycees were within their rights to keep politics out of the festival.

"State law criminal trespass was explained to Mr. Gibson and again they asked him to leave, and he refused to leave the area," said Lt. Martin. "He told them [the police] that we could take him to jail."

Lt. Martin said a man carrying a Republican sign was asked to leave the day before and he did so.
