GAINESVILLE - Little ghosts and goblins from all over descended on the square in the heart of Gainesville Friday afternoon; it was time again for Trick or Treat on the Square, the annual Halloween ritual hosted by Main Street Gainesville's downtown merchants.

As in all the 18 years past, everything was downtown from Superman to the Wolfman, from Dracula to Frankenstein, pint-sized versions of course, seeking treats from the merchants. Their goal with the afternoon trick or treating was to make the spooky occasion safer than wandering about at night.

Main Street Manager Angela Thompson said the merchants also had fun dressing up themselves, offering an afternoon of fun along with their sweet treats.

"This is our version of Marde Gras," she said. "We're swimming in candy, we have lots and lots of candy for all the kids."

Thompson said nearly all the 50 shop and restaurant owners downtown participated making sure their little goblin visitors all went home with trick or treat bags full of treats.

Trick or Treat on the Square is also a great promotional opportunity every year according to Thompson. Costumes were innovative as well as colorful and creative. Little Zacharee Markuten came as a fire truck.

"He didn't want to be a fireman, he wanted to be a fire truck," said Dad, Jeff Markuten.

His box shaped bright red version of a Gainesville pumper attracted a lot of attention and admiration, especially from fire fighters who were also handing out goodies.

Sister Bailee Markuten, one year old, watched all the excitement perched on Dad's shoulder dressed as a bumblebee.

"Her nick name is 'Bee'," Dad said.

Markuten said it was the first Trick or Treat on the Square for his children, who were just old enough for the first time to join in the fun.
