LULA - Veterans Day seemed an appropriate day to name the newest city park for Major Kevin Jenrette, a National Guard officer from Lula who was killed in action last year in Afghanistan.

Shannon Jenrette cut the ribbon Thursday for the park named for her husband near the intersection of Main Street and Athens Street across the city's Veterans Park. She said it would serve as a reminder for her, and everyone else.

"I think this is a very honorable way to honor my husband as well as all other veterans," she said. "This is a park that is right in the middle of town and everybody who lives here drives b by it every day. I go by it at least twice a day taking the kids to and from school; it's a nice way to remember him."

Col. Peter VanAmburgh, featured speaker at the park's ribbon cutting, was Jenrette's commanding officer and said he was a great soldier who would be missed.

"He was a super soldier and he passed doing exactly what he felt called to do which is a blessing," the Colonel said.

Mayor Milton Turner served as master of ceremonies and said this would be an interactive park.

"People can come over, sit down and eat and go back to our Veterans Park," Mayor Turner said. "We're proud to honor all our veterans."

Jenrette was one of three Georgia National Guardsmen killed by an IED (Improvised Explosives Device) near Kapisa, Afghanistan, on June 9, 2009.

His funeral service was held at Timber Ridge Baptist Church near Lula.
