GFD moving from downtown

GAINESVILLE - Gainesville Fire Chief Jon Canada says everything is ready to go for the final move of the downtown fire station and headquarters out of the old Public Safety Building downtown on Jesse Jewell Parkway.

Canada told City Council Tuesday the new station in the Public Safety Complex off Queen City Parkway should be operational by Wednesday afternoon.

"We'll be running calls out of there late tomorrow afternoon, early nightfall," Chief Canada said. "We just want to do some testing on our radio system and phone system to make sure it is up and running."

Canada said the department had to remain ready to respond to fires while preparing to move into its new location.

Gainesville Police moved into their new headquarters November 1st into the section of the complex called the Gainesville Justice Center, which is also where municipal court will convene and City Council will hold meetings.
City Manager Kip Padgett advised council members he plans for them to hold their first work session in the new location On December 17th.
