GAINESVILLE - Temperatures in the 30's with a brisk wind that made it feel colder did not discourage the crowd who turned out Sunday evening for Christmas on Green Street, 2010, the city's historically based holiday celebration that annually ushers in the season.

Once again Gainesville's historic homes from the early 20th century were decorated and lit up to welcome Yule Tide and invited the people in for a look at how Christmas was celebrated nearly a century ago. The parade of classic cars featured Santa's arrival aboard a Gainesville fire engine in the event hosted every year by the Hall County Historical Society.

The Ladies of the Newcomers Club in period dress were stationed in front of the homes that were spared by the devastating tornado of 1936 that destroyed the downtown business district.

Debbie Flanagan, in bright red 1920's attire, welcomed visitors and passed out information in front of the Charles Smith House.

"We're here to help people out with their families to enjoy the happiness," she said.

It was first time to see Christmas on Green Street for Jennifer Jalbert from Gainesville, who bundled under a blanket, waiting to see Santa and the parade of cars. She said what she saw helped her into the holiday spirit.

"I think it's awesome, everybody is so merry and happy," she said.

Parris Day said she looked forward to the cold weather 'goodies' that were handed out to visitors.

"I actually like how everybody is giving out cocoa and the other things" she said, quickly admitting that hot cocoa was readily the drink of the day, with the frigid temperatures.

Bands and choruses up and down Green Street sang and played the favorites of the season, there was story telling and a vintage horse and carriage took families back in time.
