School Superintendent Dr. Merrianne Dyer says the board now has to cover a $1.4-million state allotment cut plus the money needed to clear the deficit.
"We have to come through with $1.4-million plus $780,000," she said.
The $780,000 was the amount needed to get school finances back into the black after whittling down a five plus million dollar deficit the system incurred two years ago. Among other things inaccurate accounting procedures were blamed which led to the dismissal of then Supt. Steve Ballowe. Dr. Dyer hopes the system can get out of the deficit this year, but added that's uncertain if state revenue shrinks any more.
Dr. Dyer said that the priority in the new school year would be to keep teachers in the classrooms and hold class sizes down. In the face of ever dwindling revenues, she said she does not expect to cut teacher jobs, but may trim schedules.
