CLARKESVILLE - While the norm has become the downsizing...or even closure...of many manufacturing plants in America, one northeast Georgia company has bucked that trend.

Scovill Manfacturing in Clarkesville opted instead to close its plant in China and keep its Georgia plant open. Plant manager Mark Lowery said that workers in China are plentiful and the labor is less expensive, but there's a downside to the Chinese workforce, too.

"The [Chinese] employees have opportunities to go...every which way...so our turnover in china was 60 and 70-percent each year," noted Lowery.

Lowery said that Scovill saved 175 jobs for Georgians by closing the Chinese plant. Scovill is the largest employer in Clarkesville, the county seat for Habersham County. The company makes fasteners for clothing.

Lowery appeared Monday on WDUN's The Local Hour.
