ATLANTA - He made it closer to the top spot than he did last year, but Hall County 6th grader Parker Ramey came up just a bit short in Friday's statewide spelling bee.

In a record long event, the Davis Middle School student correctly spelled 14 words before he was eliminated with the word "protanopia." Last year, he spelled his way into 7th place, but this year Ramey came in 5th in the competition. A total of 20 students from around Georgia made it to the state event at Georgia State University Atlanta this year.

Ramey correctly spelled the following words at the 2010 bee:

Innate
Fatigue
Meistersinger
Consensus
Quinine
Cravat
Kohlrabi
Poignant
Calypso
Soliloquy
Raconteur
Ipecac
