CUMMING - The transformation of State Route (SR) 20 in Forsyth County from a two-lane road to a four-lane road from Samples Road to Peachtree Industrial Boulevard is one step closer to reality, after the recent approval of the project's Environmental Assessment.

Forsyth County has received notification from the Georgia Department of Transportation that both the Federal Highway Administration and the National Parks Service have approved the final environmental document for the work. This approval is a significant step in advancing the project forward toward construction, according to county officials.

The project includes a 44-foot, depressed, grassed median from Samples Road in Forsyth County to Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Gwinnett County.

The design of the portion of SR 20 from Samples Road to James Burgess Road, which is still in progress, is being completed by Forsyth County. The Georgia Department of Transportation will fund and handle both right-of-way acquisition and construction for the entire project.

"A project of this scope will likely take two and a half to three years to complete once construction begins," Director of Engineering John Cunard said.

"It is our understanding that the Georgia Department of Transportation should authorize the right-of-way funding for this project as early as this month, so even though the construction is not expected to begin for several years, we are certainly making progress toward this road improvement project."
