LAWRENCEVILLE - Gwinnett Medical Center Wednesday broke ground for its Heart and Vascular Center, a $33-million project set to open its doors in early 2012.

Medical Center President and CEO Phil Wolfe was among the dignitaries who shoveled the ceremonial sand to start construction of the 40,000 square foot building.

He said Gwinnett is the largest populated county in the nation with around 800,000 people, without a heart program, so there is a need and building the heart center is like bringing in a new industry.
