GAINESVILLE - Hall County Commissioners broke ground Thursday morning on the county's $12-million North Hall Community Center on Nopone Road, saying it was time to move forward on a long awaited project.

The earth movers started site grading in the back ground as commissioners, library board members and Friends of North Hall Park members gathered under a large tent for the ground breaking ceremony and then broke ground for the facility, with an expected completion date of 12 to 14 months.

Project architect Jeff Crocker of Brewster Crocker Architects said it was a good site for a needed facility.

"I love the park aspect of it," Crocker said. "I love what this park is going to do to offer more than just recreation for the community; it's a complete facility as far as outdoor and indoor is concerned and offers something for everybody in the county."

Crocker said building a new library as part of the new park would save the county $2-million.

County Commissioner Steve Gailey said it was time to move ahead with preparation and construction even though building a new library at the site remains under a court challenge by the City of Clermont. Clermont officials and citizens contend that the county broke its promise and commitment to build the new library in their town on property the county purchased for construction.

"I know that there's some potential litigation involved in the park, especially with the library component but I'm hoping that anything that comes out of that litigation does not affect the actual moving with the park," Gailey said. "We need the ball fields, we need the fields, and we need that type of stuff right now."
