GAINESVILLE - Nineteen military veterans who reside at Smoky Springs Retirement Community in Gainesville were recognized Saturday with a Wall of Honor picturing them when they were in the service.

Smoky Springs manager LeRia Hudgins said she wanted the veteran residents to be recognized.

"The veterans were not honored on a wall or in any particular area," Hudgins said. "We got with the families and got pictures."

Hudgins said it took some time to round up all the pictures from photo albums but she said it was an honor to present the Wall to the veterans.

"It's been a great reaction, the families are all proud and we are proud, it's a special day," Hudgins added, saying it's important to recognize the older Second World War veterans.

"Right now we still have the opportunity to get their stories and their experiences," Hudgins said. "The veterans we have here who fought in World War ll, their minds are still very strong and clear and they have some great stories to tell."

World War ll Marine vet Mack Abbott stood at the Wall and viewed his picture from 1945 in the Pacific when he was 22 years old.

"It was about a month before the war was over," Abbott recalled.

Abbott, now 88 years old, wrote a book about his wartime experiences from Pearl Harbor to the Japanese surrender four years later.

Also pictured on the Wall of Honor are Army vet Oliver Ames, Steve Berry, Air Force; Gerold Daly, Air Force; Sam Engle, Army Air Force; Richard Galshack, Air Force; George Gunnoe, National Guard; Everett Hodsdon, Air Force; Len Hoover, Army; Bob Kauffman, Marines; Joe Kirkpatrick, Navy; Ed Martel, Air Force; Carl Mercer, Army; Jack Newman, Army; Tom Nicholson, Army; Alice Springer, Air Force; Jim Thayer, Marines and Air Force, and Mel Younglove, Air Force and Coast Guard.
