Board Vice Chairman Nath Morris said 75 students have to raise $500 five each; that's a lot of money in these economic hard times.
"We're hearing from a lot of people in the community," Morris said. "They said they're being asked all the time for money, and we understand. If you multiply 75 kids times needing to come up with $500 each, that's a lot of money they're asking."
Morris said if the students don't have it they'll have to go out and ask for it and that makes it a fund raising issue.
FED WINDFALL, ONE LESS WINTER HOLIDAY
Board members learned $5-million in additional federal stimulus money may mean additional class room time they did not count on next year, but it also means one less day off for students and teachers. School Superintendent Will Schofield said with more money to pay teachers, next February 21st would not be a vacation day and there won't be a four-day weekend.
"That certainly will probably turn into a three day weekend in February so we just didn't want people make vacation plans for the 4th day," Schofield said.
Schofield said he expects to confirm next month that the fed dollars are coming through a state funding application. Vice Chairman Morris said board members expressed concern about accepting stimulus money.
"It's money that is not there and has to be paid back, but if somebody is going to get it I want Hall County kids to get it," Morris said.
