GAINESVILLE - Gainesville's new Public Safety Building should be ready for occupancy in less than two months and city council members Thursday reviewed a charter change adding the building to the list of locations where council could meet.

Mayor Ruth Bruner said the city plans to start moving into the structure off Queen City Parkway by the end of the month; The Secretary of State's Office in Atlanta has to be notified of the change, Council could convene its first meeting in the new building by December.

"What we're doing is adding the Public Safety facility and municipal court room to that definition," Mayor Bruner said.

Council could also continue to meet at its other city owned properties including the Georgia Mountains Center, the Civic Center, Fair Street Community Center and the Frances Meadows Aquatic and Community Center. Police Chief Brian Kelly told Council he plans to move his department into the Public Safety Building by November 1st.

NEW GOLF CARTS, NEW FEES

Golfers at Gainesville's Chattahoochee Golf Course could be paying a dollar golf cart fee, maybe two dollars in a year, under a request to buy new carts presented to Council by Director of Golf Rodger Hogan.

Council members suggested up to a three dollar fee in order to pay a $161,000 interfund loan for a new golf cart fleet; Hogan said golfers might choose to play at other courses if the fee is raised to three dollars. The 18-hole cart fee would be set at a dollar with the nine hole fee at fifty cents on September 18th or upon delivery of the new 65 cart fleet from Yamaha Golf Carts.

Hogan said the present fleet is worn out after four years, is out of warranty and needs replacing, with carts often breaking down on the course.
