NEW HOLLAND - An intersection sign unveiling in New Holland Sunday, honoring a long time Hall County school superintendent and church pastor, was attended by friends, relatives and Gov.-elect Nathan Deal and Georgia's soon-to-be new First Lady, Sandra Deal.

The intersection of Quarry Street and Jesse Jewell Parkway is now The Rev. H.G. Jarrard Memorial Intersection. The unveiling occurred after a church service at New Holland Baptist Church, where Rev. Jarrard was pastor for more than 37 years. Jarrard was also Hall County schools superintendent for 30 years.

"This is a great day today to honor one of the real heroes of Hall County," Gov.-elect Deal said. "He was a long time serving school superintendent and pastor of New Holland Baptist Church."

Deal said he and his wife have a sentimental attachment to the church and to Rev. Jarrard. They were married at New Holland just over 44 years ago and Mrs. Deal grew up in the New Holland community.

Deal said the transition leading up to his state capital inauguration on January 10th in Atlanta is nearly complete with a few more appointments to make.

"We're almost there," he said. "We have a few more appointments still to be done but we hope to conclude those fairly quickly."

Mrs. Deal said she and a school classmate, Broadus Duncan, worked together to get the intersection named and marked after Duncan suggested it. Duncan was also a long time member of New Holland Church and attended East Hall High School with Mrs. Deal. A Georgia House of Representatives resolution designated the intersection name.

U.S. Marine Major Kevin Jarrard, Commandant at Riverside Military Academy, said Reverend Jarrard was his great, great uncle and the sign unveiling brought back fond family memories.

"It's a great day to remember lots of happy memories," Major Jarrard said. "I'm happy to see it; it will give me an opportunity to remind my children of their Godly heritage."

Long time New Holland member Lucille Carter recalled Henry Grady Jarrard as her pastor and a family friend as well as her school superintendent, saying the intersection sign is long overdue.

"He had two goals in life," she said. "One was to carry the Gospel to as many people as he could and to have every child get the best education they possibly could."
