GAINESVILLE - The Gainesville police officers and fire fighters who helped save the young woman who jumped from the Dawsonville Highway Bridge into Lake Lanier February 10th received Meritorious Service Awards at Tuesday night's City Council meeting.

Police Chief Brian Kelly handed out awards to the officers who heard Bianca Vera's cries for help that icy morning after she jumped from the bridge to avoid being hit by an oncoming truck. Fire Chief Jon Canada gave the same award to members of Engine Company 22 who responded and got Vera off the lake bank and to the hospital. They received personal thanks from the woman they rescued.

"I obviously would not be here without the help of all these service men," Vera said. "I'd like to say a big thank you."
