CUMMING - Former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich Saturday at the 9th District GOP Convention in Cumming repeatedly blasted the Obama Administration as socialist and a failure on every front, foreign and domestic, and while he has not announced as a presidential candidate, many delegates felt he sounded like one.

In fact in Friday night's convention straw pole, 9th District Republicans chose Gingrich as their favorite presidential candidate.

Gingrich said the path is clear for voters to clean up the 'Washington mess' in 2012.

"The easiest, best way too clean up the mess is 40 more House Republicans, 12 Republican Senators, and a Republican President," Gingrich said. "If you'll tell all your friends across the whole country I believe we could have in 2012 one of the great historic elections in American history."

Gingrich concluded his half hour key note speech by saying if Americans are given the choice they will defeat the left on "on a scale we have not seen in our life time and that will be good for America."

Convention Chairman Doug Grammer said 2012 would be a big year;it includes re-drawing district lines.

"I'm not sure how the 9th District is going to be configured next year but North Georgia is going to vote Republican," Grammer said.

Republicans were giving Gingrich mixed reviews as he toured local GOP meetings Saturday.

The stop in Cumming was one of three visits to Republican gatherings by Gingrich Saturday as he raises money for a possible presidential run next year against President Obama.

At a meeting in Lawrenceville, Gingrich praised House Republicans for forcing a budget deal with Obama that trims $38 billion in government spending. Gingrich said he would eliminate the capital gains tax. He blasted Obama's intervention in Libya and described the decision-making behind it as confused.

Republican Melvin Everson said Gingrich's command of policy issues makes him the strongest potential candidate in the GOP pack.

But Republican Jeanette Bean said she would not vote for Gingrich because of personal baggage that includes three marriages.
