GAINESVILLE - Hall County Planning Commissioners approved a dance hall and a church day care center during their brief meeting late Monday in Gainesville at the Georgia Mountains Center. Planning staff recommended approval for both applicants.

The 'Shy City Jazz Lounge' won approval after commissioners were confident there would be adequate security on the premises on Athens Street both inside the lounge and outside in the parking lot.

Chairman Don Smallwood expressed concern about the dance hall application featuring live jazz music but said it fit the zoning.

"It's something that's hard to police but it's something that he's asking for that comes under our comprehensive plan," Smallwood said.

The Covenant Connection Church on Atlanta Highway also got a unanimous yes vote for its daycare center to care for up to 175 children with the promise of 20 new child care jobs with training included, according to church pastor W.L. Snead.

"We just want to provide quality care for the community," Snead said. "There's huge need for child care in the community."
