Hall Democrats hear from state party leader

GAINESVILLE - Deputy Director of the state Democratic Party said in Hall County Saturday that the key to success in 2012 is convincing people that the Democrats are on the right side of the issues.

Rashad Richey spoke at the Hall Democrats mini-retreat at Cedar Hill Enrichment Center on Dawsonville Highway.

Two big Republican strong hold counties, Gwinnett and Cobb, have increasing Hispanic numbers and a potentially increasing Democratic vote but Richey said he's not focused on demographics.

"It's all messaging," Richey said. "It's not complete demographics, we want to make sure that our message remains as it always has been, a universal message that everybody can connect to."

Richey said another key to winning next year is getting people registered to vote and getting them to the polls.

"It's a different process," according to Richey. "The methodology of voter registration and participation are different. Voter registration can be very quick but participation you have to earn. You have to earn that particular person's ability to decide, I'm going to vote for this guy."

Hall County Democratic Party Chairman Jim Taflinger said local Democrats are planning a strategy stressing work on expanding party numbers, getting candidates on the ballot and getting voters to the polls.

"We need to let people know what we stand for," Taflinger said. "We talk about left or right but the reality is we're on the right side of the issues for the people and they need to understand that."
